Baglung

Two people died after their house collapsed due to a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall at Badagaun in Galkot Rural Municipality-9 here in the district on Friday. The deceased are 75-year-old Jayalal BC and his 13-year-old grandson Bivek, Area Police Office Harichaur said.

According to police, the back wall of the house collapsed at around 2 am, killing the grandfather and grandson on the spot.  Local Ram Bahadur BK said he found the duo trapped in the debris when he went to check the status of the family members as there was no movement in the house until late in the morning.

Locals said they heard a bang at night and assumed it could be somewhere in open place.

Police Sub-Inspector Man Bahadur BK said the wall could have collapsed causing human casualties as the wall was built without leaving an open space from the nearby land. Locals and police worked together to retrieve the bodies by removing the debris. The dead bodies have been kept at Galkot Primary Health Centre for post-mortem.

Bibek had been living in the care of his grandfather as his father is in Qatar and his mother eloped with another man, locals said.

Last Friday, four members of a family had been killed in a landslide at Nisikhola-2 in the district. Similarly, two others had died in another landslide incident in Nisikhola-1.

Expressing sadness over the incident, Chief District Officer Rishiram Tiwari said he has directed the concerned government bodies to identify the houses that are prone to landslide hazards and make arrangement a safe shelter.
