Senior orthopaedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital Dr Govinda KC reached Dang on Saturday to stage a hunger strike.

Though KC planned to stage the fast from Saturday, he postponed his protest until 2pm on Sunday after Health Minister Gagan Thapa assured him of addressing his demands for reforms in the country’s medical education and health care. Dr KC said he plans to stage his fast on the premises of the Shirdi Satya Sai Temple in Ghorahi.

Dr KC, who has already staged 10 hunger strikes in Kathmandu, said he moved to Dang in order to stress the importance of improving health services outside the Capital. “I am here to raise the health problems of rural areas,” he said.

KC said his major demands are establishment of a medical college in Dang, reforms 

in the country’s medical education sector and withdrawal of the impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki.
