The last inmate to die due to lack of treatment is Ishmael Nadaf of Khori-7, Mahottari, on December 26, who was serving a 10 year jail sentence at Jhumka Prison on rape charges. According to a post mortem report prepared by Dharan-based BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, the cause for Nadaf’s death has been attributed to a heart attack.
Jumka Prison Jailer Ganesh Adhikari said that the mortality rate amongst prison inmates would decline if the government decides to provide free medical treatment.
Jhumka Prison was established as a regional correctional facility and houses 1,500 inmates. With this in mind and an opportunity to get prompt medical treatments the district prisons have been shifting their prisoners. This has created more problems for jail, said Adhikari.
