The residents of Parkitole and Sarkitole in Bedkot Municipality-4, Kanchanpur, have been frequenting various government offices, including municipality office, demanding funds to construct an embankment to control the Chaudhar river.
They say the river has been eroding land at Parkitole and Sarkitole during monsoon every year. Local Ganesh Bhul said the flooded river swept away a gabion-wall installed as a defence against flood during last monsoon.
“We are requesting local bodies for their assistance in building a permanent embankment,” he said.
Though some social organisations and Water Induced Disaster Prevention Division Office have been providing gabions to the villagers to control the river during monsoon, the villagers say the government has not launched any programmes to save their settlements. Local Satyaraj Oda said river spill over its banks and flood their farmland and homes every monsoon. “We have been demanding the authorities to come up with a permanent solution to the flood problems we have been facing every year,” he said.
Chief District Officer Manohar Khanal said he has directed the municipality office to provide Rs 600,000 to construct embankment in Chaudhar river.
