The Bara District Court on Wednesday sentenced former CPN-UML lawmaker Ram Chandra Pyasi Kusawaha to 10 years in prison after finding him guilty of murdering fellow party leader Mohammad Alam. A single bench of Judge Bhojraj Sharma passed the verdict against Kusawaha and his accomplishes for their involvement in the killing.

Alam, the then CPN-UML candidate from Bara-4, succumbed to bullet injuries in Bara on October 4, 2013.

Kusawaha and three Indian nationals—Atik Khan, Raju Shrivastava and Bipin Yadav—were sentenced to 10 years. Another accused, Indian national Rajesh Mishra was convicted and slapped with a 20-year jail term. All the accused have been remanded in judicial custody for further investigation.

Two motorcycle-borne assailants had opened fire at Alam, a permanent resident of Lipanimal-1, from point-blank in the district. Alam was answering a call on his mobile phone when he was waylaid by the assailant who shot him on his head from close range.

Critically injured Alam was airlifted to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu where he died during treatment on October 10. Alam was shot within 24 hours after he had filed his candidacy for the CA election. Najama Khatun, wife of Alam, who was fielded by the UML in the place of Alam, won the election from the constituency.
