A committee led by Education Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel named Dr Bhagwan Koirala as the commission’s vice-chairman. A secretary or joint-secretary from the Education/Health Ministry, dean at the Patan Academy of Health Sciences and chairpersons of Nepal Medical Council and Nursing Council are the members. Jagadish Agrawal, Dr Arjun Karki, Dr Krishna Giri and Dr Suresh Kanaudiya are the other members. Kanaudiya is the chairman of Private Hospital’s Association.
Education Minister Pokharel said the commission was formed in accordance with the agreement reached between the government and Dr KC, who on Wednesday announced to stage an indefinite hunger strike from Monday if the government did not implement the agreements reached with him.
The veteran at the TU Teaching Hospital has staged seven hunger strikes over the past few years demanding reforms in the medical education sector.
