At a time when many government schools across the country are witnessing a sharp decrease in the number of students, some community schools in Jhapa are finding it difficult to manage a huge inflow of children.
Schoolchaun Higher Secondary School (SHSS) at Maharanijhoda, Himalaya Higher Secondary School (HHSS) in Damak, Pragati Higher Secondary School at Juropani, Kankai Higher Secondary School at Surunga and Pashupati Secondary School at Bahundangi are the ones having such large number of students.
Authorities in the schools said parents are still visiting them to admit their students even two months after the new academic session started.
“We enroll a limited number of students as we do not want them to study in crammed rooms and compromise on quality,” said Baburam Bhandari, head master of the SHSS, which has maintained the highest pass percentage of students in School Leaving Certificate results among community schools in the district for three consecutive years. The school has 858 students. Beduram Bhandari, chairman of the school management committee, said students are attracted to the school due to its English-medium classes, disciplined environment and hardworking teachers. “We also share our teaching method and role of parents to community schools having weak performance as per direction of the District Education Office,” he said. Dilliraman Poudel, head teacher at the HHSS, said parents are still requesting him to enroll their children.
“We returned 300 students after they failed an entrance exam. But, parents are still pressing us for admission,” he said. The HHSS, which has 1,459 students, also runs separate English-medium classes. The school authorities said 86 students from private schools enrolled in ninth grade this year.
