Martyr Dharma Bhakta Mathema was commemorated as part of the Martyrs Memorial Week on Sunday. The event organiser paid tribute to Mathema by garlanding his statue in Sifal on the occasion. Mathema along with Shukra Raj Shastri, Dasharath Chand and Gangalal Shrestha are considered the first martyrs of the country. They were executed for fighting for democracy during the autocratic Rana regime in 1941. The first day of the Martyrs Memorial Week was observed on Thursday by unveiling a life-size statue of Shahstri in Teku, Kathmandu, the site where he was executed. (RSS)
