A one-horned rhino from the Chitwan National Park, which was swept away by the Rapti river flood on August 11, has been rescued from Bagaha area in India on Friday.

Park official Abhinaya Pathak said the three-year-old female rhino was released to its habitat on Friday. The CNP team is also preparing to rescue another rhino that is stranded at India’s Balmiki Nagar and two others said to be at Keuleni and Narsahi areas in neighbouring Nawalparasi district. The Rapti river flood had swept away five CNP rhinos; one of them was found dead at Gandak Canal.

More than 15 protected deer also died in the  flood, the CNP authority said.

Officials said the casualty  numbers could go up as the they were still assessing the flood-affected areas.

Pathak said the flood had mostly affected small animals. The flood also likely affected the park’s Ghariyal population, he added.
