It will be the first ever convention of the RPP following the November 22 merger of two factions, one led by Kamal Thapa and the other by Pashupati Shumsher Rana.
The RPP now commands 37 seats in the 595-strong Parliament, making it the fourth largest party.
It was agreed during the party merger that the unified RPP would hold its general convention within three months to elect a new leadership.
The party has called for the convention starting February 17 based on the agreement.
Dilnath Giri, chief whip of the party, said that the general conventions at 240 electoral constituencies will be held on February 3 and the district-level conventions will be held on February 7 to select the representatives for the general convention.
The party leadership has already directed the local-level leaders to forward the final list of representatives to the Central Election Committee by February 13, Giri added.
The general convention will decide the RPP’s position on republicanism and federalism, the same issues that had earlier put the two factions of the party at odds. The RPP-N, led by Thapa, had been championing the agenda of reinstating constitutional monarchy and scrapping federalism before the unity.
The Rana-led RPP, on the other hand, had favoured a republic order and federalism in the country. The only issue that the two factions had a common view on was reinstatement of Hindu state.
Giri said that the unified RPP will come up with the party’s formal position on republicanism and federalism through the general convention, besides electing a new Central Working Committee and the leadership.
The convention will elect one chairman and a 150-member Central Working Committee. Currently there are 300 members in the CWC.
