Deliberation at a UK court in the case involving Nepal Army Col Kumar Lama has been prolonged as the jury could not reach a unanimous decision on Friday whether to convict or acquit the accused.
A 12-member jury was expected to issue its verdict on Friday but the ongoing deliberation was inconclusive. The discussion started on Monday, after the defenders and prosecutors wrapped up their presentation of evidences on July 22. The jury is scheduled to meet on Monday again. There could also be rehearing of the case. The British government arrested Col Lama on January 3, 2013 as per the country’s obligation under the UN Convention Against Torture. A case was filed against him in London for criminal offence under Section 134 (1) of the Criminal Justice Act-1988.
The NA officer has been charged with torturing two individuals taken into the Army’s detention at the barracks in Kapilvastu in 2005.
