Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sushil Koirala met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon at UN headquarters in New York.
During the meeting, Moon said the unofficial blockade imposed by India on Nepal has breached Nepal’s right to free transit. He said he was concerned about the humanitarian crisis in Nepal due to the blockade.
Dr. Dinesh Bhattarai, Koirala’s former advisor on foreign affairs, who was present at the meeting, said Moon congratulated Koirala for successfully drafting the constitution under his premiership. Bhattarai said Moon was very saddened by the blockade imposed by India especially at a time when Nepal is trying to rise from the devastating earthquake that left the country in ruins. “I am really sad that India, which was first to response after the earthquake, imposed the blockade,” Bhattarai said quoting the UN secretary General.
In response, Koirala thanked the role played by the UN and stated that both the sides should work together to solve the current crisis.
Moon also enquired Koirala about his health condition.
Koirala is currently in New York for a follow-up on his cancer treatment.
