Gen Z View
Trust deficit
Whom to trust then, if the new faces are like the old guard?Rahul Singh
We all wanted changes after the Gen Z movement. Surely, not a change like the current Attorney General, who has pushed us back to normalising cronyism again. We all wanted revolution, not a revolution like today, where two people doing the same act get different treatments. We all wanted to be morally uptight, not a situation like today's, where people still say that in politics, there is no such thing called shame. We all wanted to be united, standing tall, not many separate united groups carrying different agendas, like the plethora of Gen Z groups.
The problem is not the corruption, unaccountable government or dirty political games; the real problem is us: We Nepali citizens. We all want changes in our society, but we don't dare to change ourselves. We don't want to use our senses to transform from non-sensible individuals to sensible citizens. All we want is ‘easy food on the table, cooked by someone else’, but how?
I have watched a south Indian movie named ‘REPUBLIC’ for more than 20 times, the only reason is a dialogue which I love the most, “If you overthrow one bad politician, keep in your mind that thousands of such politicians are showing their beautifully coloured skin of chameleon, but in reality they are waiting for their chance to do the same.” Is the problem their skin colour or our blind eyes? One of my teachers used to say, “Anything without common sense is non-sense.” While voting, I don't think most of the hated politicians could have won if we had this perspective.
Whom to trust then, if the new faces are like the old guard? The only thing that can help us sort this out is how realistic the plans and policies they come with while announcing their candidacy. If we can analyse those statements given by the politicians, at least we couldn't have waited for decades for oil pipes, ships, etc. The only solution is: Question, question and question. Ask the communist parties what they have done according to their ideology. What is the value of the democratic parties that silenced the millions of voices within their rank and file? What have newly formed parties done to earn trust through their plans and policies?
Youth Politics and student politics carry a lot of values, but today's version of them is different. Whatever the political party with which the youth wings and student wings are affiliated say, the youths have to follow. They have to accept the terms strictly, but why? What sort of political culture are they establishing?
