Nepal reported six more Covid-19-related deaths, on Wednesday, to take the national toll to 312.

The Ministry of Health and Population confirmed 1,081 new infections in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of infections to 49,219—15,025 of them active.

In Kathmandu Valley, 464 cases were reported in the past 24 hours—394 in Kathmandu, 36 in Bhaktapur and 34 in Lalitpur districts. As of Wednesday, the number of cases in the Valley has reached 9,440. A total of 6,942 cases were detected after prohibitory orders came into effect on August 19 midnight.

“Three women and three men died of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours,” Dr Jageshwar Gautam, spokesperson for the ministry, said during a regular press briefing.

Among the deceased, an 83-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man were from Kathmandu. Four others—73-year-old woman, 42-year-old man, 80-year-old woman and 64-year-old man—were from Kaski, Arghakhanchi, Banke and Nawalparasi (West) districts respectively.

The country has recorded 31,225 infections and 272 deaths since July 22. There were 17,994 cases and 40 Covid-19-related deaths until July 21, when the government decided to end the nationwide lockdown after four months.

According to the ministry, 108 individuals from Province 2, ninety-one from Bagmati Province, 46 from Province 5, thirty-four from Province 1, eighteen from Gandaki Province, 10 from Sudurpaschim Province, and five from Karnali Province have died of the disease so far.

As of Wednesday, the government has carried out 799,341 PCR tests across the country.

“A total of 11,167 PCR tests were carried out in the past 24 hours,”said Gautam.

Swab samples of 394 individuals in Kathmandu, 81 in Siraha, 77 in Morang, 70 in Rautahat, 56 in Sunsari, 42 each in Makwanpur and Rupandehi, 36 in Bhaktapur, 34 in Lalitpur, 26 in Saptari, 22 each in Banke and Surkhet, 21 in Chitwan, 17 in Bara, 13 in Bardiya, 12 in Nawalparasi (West), 11 in Kapilvastu, 10 in Kaski districts tested positive for the coronavirus infection in the past 24 hours.

Infections were also recorded in nine people in Dhankuta, eight in Kavre, six each in Jhapa, Parsa and Sarlahi, five in Bhojpur, four each in Nuwakot and Tanahun, and three each in Okhaldhunga, Dhanusha, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhupalchok, Lamjung and Darchula districts.

Likewise, two persons each in Khotang, Mahottari, Dhading, Baglung, Gulmi, Palpa, Dailekh and Bajhang, and one each in Udayapur, Taplejung, Sindhuli, Gorkha, Nawalparasi (East), Parbat, Syangja, Dang, Jajarkot and Achham also tested positive for the virus.

"Seven districts—Sunsari, Sarlahi, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Chitwan and Rupandehi—have more than 500 active cases,” Gautam said. “Five districts—Manang, Mustang, Humla, Mugu and Dolpa—don’t have any active cases.”

According to the ministry, 918 Covid-19 patients were discharged from various hospitals in the past 24 hours. So far, 33,882 individuals have made successful recovery.

“As of Wednesday, 162 Covid-19 patients were being treated in intensive care units across the country and 22 patients—21 in Bagmati and one in Province 5—are on ventilator support.”

Nepal reported six Covid-19-related deaths and 902 new cases on Tuesday compared to 11 deaths and 979 new infections on Monday and nine deaths and 980 new infections on Sunday.
