Nepal’s Covid-19 toll reaches 300 with 11 more deaths; 979 new infections take tally to 47,236

Nepal, on Monday, reported 11 more Covid-19 related deaths to take the national toll to 300. The total number of infections has now reached 47,236 with the confirmation of 979 new infections.
In Kathmandu Valley, 326 cases were reported in the past 24 hours, with 293 infections detected in Kathmandu, 20 in Lalitpur and 13 in Bhaktapur districts. As of Monday, the number of cases in the Valley has reached 8,580. A total of 6,082 cases were detected after the prohibitory orders were announced on August 19 midnight.
According to the ministry, 11 deaths were also reported in the past 24 hours, taking the country’s Covid-19 related toll to 300.
“Seven men and four women died of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours,” Dr Jageshwar Gautam, spokesperson for the ministry, said during a regular press briefing.
Among the deceased, three women aged 37, 83 and 90 were from Kathmandu. Two men— a 62-year-old and a 87-year-old— from Jhapa were also among the casualties. Also, a 63-year-old woman from Kaski, a 76-year-old man from Morang, a 35-year-old man from Sarlahi, a 69-year-old man from Dolakha and a 59-year-old man from Banke, also succumbed to the disease, said the ministry.
The country has recorded 29,242 infections and 260 deaths since July 22. There were 17,994 cases and 40 Covid-19-related deaths until July 21, when the government decided to end the nationwide lockdown after four months.
According to the ministry, 106 individuals from Province 2, eighty-seven from Bagmati Province, 42 from Province 5, thirty-three from Province 1, seventeen from Gandaki Province, 10 from Sudurpaschim Province, and five from Karnali Province have died of the disease so far.
As of Thursday, the government has carried out 777,563 PCR tests across the country.
“A total of 9,218 PCR tests were carried out in the past 24 hours,”said Gautam.
Swab samples of 293 individuals from Kathmandu, 73 from Makwanpur, 65 from Sunsari, 44 from Dhanusa, 42 from Banke, 41 each from Siraha, Bardiya and Rupandehi, 39 from Morang, 30 from Kaski, 20 each from Sarlahi and Lalitpur, 19 each from Saptari, Chitwan and Surkhet, 18 from Gorkha, 16 each from Jhapa and Nawalparasi (East), 15 from Lamjung, 13 from Bhaktapur, tested positive for the coronavirus infection in the past 24 hours.
Infections were also recorded in eight people in Gulmi, seven in Kanchanpur, six each in Panchthar and Tanahun, five in Palpa and four in Dhading.
Likewise, three persons each from Mahottari, Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, Dailekh and Kailali, two each from Kapilvastu, Nawalparasi (West) and Kalikot and one each from Udayapur, Bhojpur, Solukhumbu, Sindhuli, Parbat, Pyuthan, Jajarkot, Jumla, Bajhang and Bajura, also tested positive for the virus.
“Eleven districts—Morang, Sunsari, Dhanusha, Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Chitwan and Rupandehi—have more than 500 active cases,” Gautam said. “Five districts—Taplejung, Mustang, Humla, Mugu and Dolpa—don’t have any active cases.”
According to the ministry, 1,736 Covid-19 patients were discharged from various hospitals in the past 24 hours. So far, 30,677 individuals have made successful recovery.
“As of Thursday, 171 Covid-19 patients were being treated in intensive care units across the country and 20 patients—18 in Bagmati and two in Province 5—are on ventilator support.”
Nepal, on Sunday, had reported nine deaths and 980 new infections. On Saturday, Nepal had reported 1,041 new cases and nine deaths. The country, on Friday, saw a record daily infection surge for a second day with 1,359 new coronavirus cases and 14 more deaths. Nepal had reported 1,228 new cases and six deaths on Thursday compared to 12 deaths and 1,120 new cases on Wednesday and 11 deaths and 1069 new cases on Tuesday.
