All three departmental teams progress into the playoff stage after APF’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Bagmati guaranteed them at least top four spot in the Super League.Sports Bureau
Armed Police Force Club, Tribhuvan Army Club and Nepal Police Club all progressed into the playoff stage of the ANFA Women’s League after APF thrashed Bagmati 6-0 in their second round match at the ANFA Complex in Satdobato, Lalitpur on Wednesday.
Rashmi Kumari Ghising and Saru Limbu each scored a brace for APF, with Preeti Rai also adding her name to the scoresheet. Bagmati’s Semihangma Limbu Pandhak inadvertently contributed an own goal to the tally.
The outcome means, Bagmati, who have only three points after playing six matches, will not be able to leapfrog any of the three departmental teams even if they win their remaining two matches.
Defending champions APF lead the standings, boasting 15 points from five matches and extending their remarkable winning streak in the competition to 15 games. They are also unbeaten in the tournament. They had played a goalless stalemate in their opening match of the league against Police. Army and Police are tied on 10 points but Army occupy the second position due to superior goal difference.
Bagmati still have an outside chance to make the playoffs as Waling remain winless in the Super League.
The top four teams at the end of the double round robin league enter into the playoffs. The group winners and group runners-up vie against each other in Qualifier 1 for a direct berth in the final. The losing side of Qualifier 1 will meet the winners of Eliminator—to be played between the third- and fourth-placed teams—in the second Qualifier to determine the second finalist. The championship match is scheduled for January 29.
APF completely dominated the game from the beginning but found Bagmati’s defence difficult to breach until late in the first half.
Ghising was finally able to break the deadlock in the 43rd minute, heading in a corner from set-piece specialist Anita Basnet.
Bagmati’s defence dramatically unravelled after conceding their first goal and let another in the injury time of the first half as Ghising struck again, converting a well-timed cross from Sabita Rana Magar with a lovely finish.
APF got their third in the 55th minute when Pandhak’s attempt to clear the ball away from the goalline diverted into her own net.
Saru Limbu, who had rattled the post in the 33rd minute, furthered APF’s advantage a minute later, coolly slotting home after a net assist from substitute Anita KC.
Rai extended APF’s lead to 5-0 in the 88th minute, firing a stunning long-range strike into the top corner.
KC nearly added in the stoppage time but her shot was saved by Bagmati’s substitute goalkeeper Karun Budhathoki.
Limbu sealed the rout seconds later with a precise low drive into the bottom corner.
