Army climb to third place, Police register first win

In the match played at Anfa Complex in Satdobato, skipper Bharat Khawas and Tek Bahadur Budathoki scored for the to secure three points for Army and leapfrog Jawalakhel Youth Club to move to third place on the table. With two victories and a defeat, Army are tied on points with second-placed Machhindra Club with six points each but stay third on goal difference.
Army controlled proceedings in the first half but struggled to break the stubborn Sherpa defense. The first scoring chance fell to Sherpa with Ashish Gurung wasting a scoring opportunity in the eighth minute. Gurung's shot was comfortably saved by Army goalkeeper Bikesh Kuthu. Army threatened on the 25th minute only for George Prince Karki to head Bikash Tamang's corner just wide off the bar. Army skipper Khawas had the best opportunity to open the score in the 41st minute but failed to find the back of the net despite beating Sherpa's goalkeeper with his shot.
Sherpa Club improved their performance in the second-half but soon trailed after Khawas atoned for his earlier missed opportunity to open the scoring in the 57th minute. Khawas dribbled past defender Ashish Gurung and lobed over the goalie who had sprinted from the six-yard box to stop Army skipper. Four minutes later, Tek Budathoki took advantage of a poor clearance by Sherpas’ Cameroonian recruit Ulrich Siwe to double his side's lead.
Budathoki latched a left-footed shot into the net when Sherpa's Cameroonian player Ulrich Siewe failed to clear the ball from inside the box. Army had few other opportunities to get a third but were let down by their poor finishing. Khawas's shot few minutes after their second goal was cleared by Sherpa's defender Niraj Basnet.
Army coach Nabin Neupane was happy with the win but pointed out areas of improvement in the midfield in upcoming matches. "We played well but lacked creativity in the midfield especially in the first half. We have not been able to play the way we want," said Neupane. Sherpa's coach Sanjeeb Budathoki said they conceded goals due to mistakes in the second half. "We bettered our performance but lost the match due to silly mistakes," lamented Budathoki.
In another match played at Dashrath Stadium, 10-men Nepal Police Club registered their first win in the league with a 2-0 victory over Saraswati Youth Club. Suman Lama and Bhola Silwal scored for Police in the second half. Police played with a man down for the entire second half after Anjan Rai was slapped with a second yellow card.
The first victory of the campaign lifted Police, who played 0-0 draw against Sherpas and 1-0 defeat to Three Star, to seventh place with four points. Saraswati are languishing at the bottom of the table and have yet to open accounts.
Armed Police Force will face the challenge of Three Star Club at Dasharath Stadium in the only match on Saturday.
