Former coach of the Nepali national team returns after nine months.
Post Report
Kathmandu Gorkhas’ head coach Monty Desai arrived in Kathmandu on Thursday, marking his return to Nepal nine months after stepping down from the national team.
Desai was welcomed at Tribhuvan International Airport by Gorkhas executive director Anubhav Swar Sirohiya and CEO Suraj Singh Thakuri, signalling the start of preparations for the second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), which begins later this year.
The 51-year-old brings with him a proven track record, having previously coached the Nepal national team from February 2023 to February 2025.

During his tenure, Nepal won 11 out of 12 matches in the ICC CWC League 2, to secure qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup Global Qualifier.
It was also under his guidance that Nepal made their debut appearance in the Asia Cup and returned to the T20 World Cup after a decade-long absence.

Desai’s return has been described as more than just a coaching appointment—it marks the resumption of a journey he often refers to as deeply personal.
Kathmandu Gorkhas, formerly known as Kathmandu Gurkhas, rebranded under Kathmandu Sports Development Venture and are aiming to keep the NPL title in the capital. The management believes Desai’s familiarity with Nepali players and culture makes him the ideal figure to lead the franchise.
Desai’s arrival is expected to boost both morale and performance within the squad as the Gorkhas gear up for what promises to be an exciting NPL campaign.
