High-flying Nepal eye first-ever ODI clean sweep overseas
The Rhinos are in high spirits after stunning wins over Scotland and the Netherlands. They seek to repeat the feat in the remaining two fixtures.

Nepal are taking the field against Scotland on Sunday, riding high after pulling off impressive results in their first two matches of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series. They will be looking for another strong performance against the hosts in Dundee.
This will be Nepal’s third game at Forthill. Last week, on Monday, Nepal pulled off a thrilling 1-wicket win over Scotland in the series opener, chasing down 297—their highest successful run chase in ODIs—thanks to an unbeaten 65 from Karan KC that sealed victory on the final ball.
Nepali players, who are getting calmer under new head coach Stuart Law, didn’t stop there. On Wednesday, Aarif Sheikh’s composed 78 guided them to a five-wicket win over the Netherlands, stunning two of the top two sides in League 2 with back-to-back victories.
Now Nepal face Scotland again in a “double-header,” with Law reiterating that the team has set higher goals and is chasing bigger results.
Before arriving in Scotland, Nepal were at the bottom of the League 2 table with 6 points from 12 games. After two wins, they are now second-to-last with 10 points from 14 matches.
Scotland, who beat the Netherlands on Friday, now have 22 points from 18 games and are placed fourth. The USA (28 points), the Netherlands (26), and Oman (24) occupy the top three spots.
The top four teams in the eight-nation League 2 qualify for the World Cup Global Qualifier. Each team will play 36 games each throughout the 24 tri-series. The ongoing tri-series in Dundee is the 13th tri-series while the 14th is being hosted by Canada in August and will comprise Namibia and Scotland.

Scotland had hoped to win at least three out of their four matches in this series to reach the top of the table, but Nepal’s shock win in the first game dealt them a blow. A win against Nepal on Sunday would help Scotland leapfrog Oman into third on net run rate. If Scotland win both of their remaining games, they could still move further up.
Likewise, if Nepal beat both Scotland and the Netherlands in their remaining games, they would overtake Namibia and move into sixth. Namibia have 14 points from 20 games.
Further, two more wins for Nepal mean that the Rhinos will register their first-ever ODI clean sweep on foreign soil. Nepal also have a great run against Scotland in ODIs.
Nepal have been unbeaten against Scotland in their last five fixtures. While Nepal won four of them, one ended without a result.
Kushal Bhurtel, Aarif Sheikh and Karan KC have already hit fifties in the series. For Nepal to maintain their form, big scores will also be needed from opener Aasif Sheikh, Bhim Sharki, and skipper Rohit Kumar Paudel. Aasif has scored 20 and 19, Bhim 40 and 11, and Rohit 37 and 23 in the first two matches, respectively. In the middle order, Dipendra Singh Airee and Gulshan Jha have been finishing games strongly. Rohit believes in building momentum game by game.
Host Scotland, meanwhile, bounced back with a win over the Netherlands on Friday. They were 97/6 before a 91-run ninth-wicket stand between Mark Watt and Safyaan Sharif lifted them to 262/9. The Dutch were bowled out for 218 in 45 overs.
Nepal’s bowling also looked stronger with the return of left-arm spinner Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi to the Playing XI. He struck with his very first ball, dismissing Dutch captain Scott Edwards, and later took the wicket of Zach Lion-Cachet. Without Edwards, who was injured while batting against Nepal, the Dutch batting looked brittle against Scotland.
Nepal will wrap up their League 2 campaign on Tuesday with their final match against the Netherlands.
