‘Sandhikaal’ traces roots of Nepal’s democratic awakening
Lokranjan Parajuli’s new book explores the social and cultural forces behind the fall of the Rana regime.Post Report
‘Sandhikaal: Samajik Pariwartanka Aadharbhumi’, which narrates the story of the advent of democracy in Nepal, has been launched. Written by historical sociologist Lokranjan Parajuli, the book was released on Saturday at Nepalaya’s R-Sala.
Author Parajuli launched the book by presenting copies to historian Mahesh Raj Pant, Gen Z activist Rakshya Bam, and sociology student Yadav Aryal.
During the launch, Parajuli said that the change of the early 1950s was the biggest turning point after the formation of modern Nepal.
“After that, ordinary people were recognised as sovereign citizens. An environment of freedom was created where people could speak, read, write, publish, and organise,” said author Parajuli. “The movement brought great enthusiasm down to the grassroots level. It created a wave of transformation in areas such as social organisations, media, schools, colleges, and libraries.”

Parajuli added that while explaining the anti-Rana movement, the contributions of social, literary, radio, educational, and cinematic sectors have not been adequately discussed. “Poets, artists, cinema halls, radio, newspapers, and many others all play a role in bringing about change. I have explored these aspects in the book,” he said.
Bimal Acharya, editor at Publication Nepalaya, said that the book captures the story of the democratic path that Nepal embarked on 75 years ago.
The 308-page book is priced at Rs675. From Saturday onward, it is available for purchase at major bookstores across the country.
