Ancient symbols, contemporary canvas

Gallery 108 presents ‘Archetype’, a contemporary solo art exhibition by Krishna Gopal Shrestha.
The exhibit explores Nepal’s ancient visual traditions and sacred imagery. Through large-scale paintings inspired by early paubhas, manuscripts, sculptures, and temple art, Shrestha examines how archetypal forms continue to shape cultural memory, identity, and spiritual imagination across generations.
Having been exposed to sacred heritage sites since childhood, he developed a strong connection to art and understanding the cultural aspects behind it.
“My artworks are inspired by my upbringing in Sankhu. Drawing from religious narratives, sacred symbols, architecture and traditional art forms, the exhibition reinterprets archetypal images that have shaped collective memory across generations,” shares the artist.

He blends the vintage looks of Kathmandu’s ancient settlements and the iconography of deities. This is the archetype that holds all of his works together.
Displayed within a carefully controlled, dimly lit gallery environment, the paintings offer a more immersive visual experience.
In this month-long exhibition, the artist hopes to invite dialogue about cultural and artistic traditions of the past and present. ‘Archetype’ is Shrestha’s first solo show; he is also a faculty member at Srijana College of Fine Arts.
“His paintings do not preserve tradition as a static inheritance; they restore it as a living, evolving language," notes the exhibition’s statement.
