The third edition of the Nepal International Theatre Festival (NITFEST) began on Wednesday at Mandala Theatre in Thapagaun. The fest was inaugurated by Nisha Sharma, chancellor of the Nepal Academy of Music and Drama.
Speaking at the event, Sharma reflected on the journey of Nepal’s theatre scene, recalling the establishment of Aarohan Gurukul in 2002. “Back then, we artists dreamed of bringing theatre to a new height. Looking at today’s progress, I am overjoyed. The younger generation is sustaining the theatre scene remarkably well,” she said.
In his welcome speech, NITFEST President and actor Dayahang Rai acknowledged senior theatre artists’ contributions. “We have received knowledge and experience from the older generation, and now we are passing it on to the younger generation,” he said.
The festival will run until March 25, showcasing 17 plays from 12 countries. Alongside theatrical performances, the event features poetry recitals, music, dance performances, and other cultural programmes.
