Room to Read, a global education nonprofit dedicated to eradicating illiteracy and promoting gender equality, has joined forces with Warner Bros Discovery to premiere ‘She Creates Change’, an award-winning film series. This collaboration aims to inspire and empower girls worldwide through the captivating stories of young women.
The film series will debut on March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day, and be released subsequently on March 15 and 22 across Asia. Comprising six animated shorts and accompanying live-action mini-documentaries, ‘She Creates Change’ showcases the narratives of resilient young women from low-income communities in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Vietnam.
Each episode shows the unique challenges these girls face, such as harassment, food scarcity or early marriage, as they advocate for themselves and their futures. Geetha Murali, CEO of Room to Read, highlights the project’s aim saying, “As girls witness other young women overcoming similar challenges, they too will discover avenues to harness their own power and potential.”
Pushkar Lal Shrestha, country director of Room to Read in Nepal, emphasises the broader impact, stating, “The launch of ‘She Creates Change’ is a significant step towards Room to Read’s goal of empowering adolescent girls and providing informative stories that inspire both young girls and boys to support gender equality.”
Recognised at numerous film festivals, including Tribeca Festival, Manchester Animation Festival, London Short Film Festival, and the British Animation Awards, ‘She Creates Change’ will premiere as a feature-length film at the SXSW EDU Film Program on March 5. The trailer for the series was released in late February, and viewers can watch it on Room to Read’s YouTube channel.
The release of the film series aligns with Room to Read’s flagship fundraising campaign, ‘You Create Change’, which aims to raise $10 million to support girls’ education and gender equality. The initiative includes books, audio stories, and curriculum packages based on Room to Read's comprehensive Girls’ Education Program, accessible online, through broadcast media, and in-person programming.
Room to Read, founded in 2000, is committed to creating a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality. With projects in 23 countries and over 182,000 communities, Room to Read aims to positively impact 40 million children by 2025.
