Post Report
The Karnali Model United Nations Conference, organised by the Youth Thinker’s Society in collaboration with the US Embassy, concluded on January 28th in Surkhet. As the second provincial-level conference under the Road to Everest International Model United Nations (EIMUN) 2024 initiative, the three-day event focused on addressing prominent global issues and fostering international cooperation. The conference served as a significant precursor to the EIMUN 2024, which is scheduled to take place in Kathmandu soon.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Jivan Bahadur Shahi, former chief minister and parliament member and Mohan Maya Dhakal, the mayor of Birendranagar Municipality, Kamal Raj Lamsal, chairman of Hriti Foundation, Hridesh KC, coordinator of American Corner, Gopal Pd Bhi, director of SOS Children Village and Harihar Basnet, principal of SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, Surkhet, among others.
Fifty youths aged 18 to 30 participated in the conference. With participants representing nine districts of Karnali province, the conference aimed for inclusivity in a geographical context.
Two committees, UNHRC and ECOFIN, were formed to discuss agendas focusing on ‘Tackling discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity’ and ‘Capitalisation of natural resources and harvesting on economic sustainability’, respectively. The debates emphasised the social and legislative status of Karnali Province and highlighted the need for transformative change.
Despite the global nature of the discussed issues, the primary focus remained on the social and legislative situation in Karnali Province. This thematic approach aimed to address the reconstruction of social structures in the region while recognising the global implications of the issues and their effects. Participants actively shared their perspectives, engaged in diplomatic conversations and presented solution-driven proposals during the discussions.
With the successful conclusion of the Karnali Model United Nations Conference, the upcoming Chitwan Model United Nations, scheduled from February 8 to 10 at Kabilash Resort, Chitwan, is happening next. As these regional conferences pave the way for EIMUN 2024, they play a crucial role in fostering dialogue, understanding, and cooperation on a global scale.
