The Prime Minister’s Office directly oversees the national pride projects, many of which have made very dismal progress despite being accorded special priorities.
Even as successive governments and prime ministers have put the national priority projects on top of their priority list, the PMO conceded that their progress has been sluggish due to inefficient management of budget allocated to these projects.
The are 21 national pride projects: East West Railway; Melamchi Drinking Water Project; West Seti Hydropower Project; Second International Airport, Bara; Pokhara Regional International Airport; Gautam Buddha Regional International Airport, Rupandehi; Kathmandu-Terai Fast Track; Sikta Irrigation; Rani Jamariya-Kulria Irrigation Project; Budhigandaki Hydropower Project; Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project; Terai Hulaki Marg; Koshi Corridor; Kaligandaki Corridor; Karnali Corridor; Pushpalal Marg; Babai Irrigation Project; Pashupati Area Development Project; Lumbini Area Development Project; Bheri Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project and Chure Conservation Area Programme. But few have made desired progress.
Stressing on the need to expedite the implementation of national pride projects, PM Deuba directed Chief Secretary Som Lal Subedi to keep him updated with reports from the concerned ministry secretaries on development spending in every 15 days. The PM also issued instructions for maintaining good governance through an effective inter-ministerial coordination and maintaining high morale for better delivery of works.
On the occasion, Chief Secretary Subedi briefed PM Deuba about all the sections and structures of the PMO. He also directed the employees to ensure enforcement of laws and regulations for better performance.
