Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairman Kamal Thapa has claimed that the fourth largest party will embrace monarchy as its official position from its upcoming national convention.
Following unification between the Kamal Thapa-led RPP-Nepal and the Pashupati Shumsher Rana-led RPP on November 22 last year, the new party is holding its unity convention on February 17-20 in Kathmandu.
According to Mohan Shrestha, the party’s joint spokesperson, the RPP would go for monarchy’s revival either through consensus or vote. He said the party’s Central Working Committee would discuss the issue of monarchy from Sunday.
The Rana-led RPP had abandoned monarchy after the government formed on the backing of the popular movement of 2006 abolished it. The Thapa-led party had been carrying the agenda of reinstating monarchy. Thapa hailed monarchy as the custodian of national independence and unity.
Chairman Thapa said at an interaction organised by the Reporter’s Club on Saturday that significance of the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government would end if it failed to declare the election dates soon. According to the RPP, a ruling party, the government must declare the elections within February 19 to ensure the local polls by May 20.
