The post of vice-chancellor at the varsity is vacant since December 11 after Dr Ram Kantha Makaju completed his four-year term.
A three-member search committee formed to recommend a name for the post had failed to reach unanimity following which five names were recommended on Friday, asking PM Dahal to take the final call.
The committee has recommended Makaju, Janardan Lamichhane, Bhola Thapa, Bhadra Man Tuladhar and Mana Prasad Wagle for the post. Thapa is registrar and acting VC of the university.
Similarly, Tuladhar is former registrar, Wagle is former dean of the Department of Education and Lamichhane is incumbent head of the Department of Biotechnology in the university. The search committee, led by Education Minister Dhani Ram Poudel, had Suresh Raj Sharma, former VC of the varsity and Daman Nath Dhungana, chairman of the KU Board of Trustees, as members.
PM Dahal’ Ramesh Malla Personal Secretary Ramesh Malla said no decision had been taken regarding the appointment of vice-chancellor at KU. “The prime minister is out of the Capital; a decision will be taken once he returns on Tuesday,” said Malla. Sources at the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister’s Office said both PM Dahal and Education Minister Poudel are in favour of appointing Lamichhane, who is considered close to the CPN (Maoist Centre).
This is the first time KU is functioning without a VC since its establishment 25 years ago.
