Around 22 metric tonnes of solid waste was extracted from major rivers of Kathmandu Valley on Saturday.
Volunteers scooped up 12 metric tonnes of garbage from the Sanepa stretch of the Bagmati river on Saturday as the Bagmati River Mega Clean-up Campaign entered its 187th week.
The clean-up campaign was led by Chief Secretary Somlal Subedi, former secretaries Kishor Thapa and Keshav Bhattarai. Personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, government officials and other volunteers participated in the campaign.
The Lalitpur Sub-metropolitan City office has collected Rs 1.2 million in fines from those who violated the law and dumped garbage into the river.
Meanwhile, the Rudramati Clean-up Campaign, which is into its 146th week, extracted garbage from the Akash Bhairav temple premises at Gyaneshwor, according to Basudev Marasini, chairman of Rudramati Concern Society.
The volunteers collected two metric tonnes of solid waste from the area.
Similarly, eight metric tonnes of waste product was extracted from the Bishnumati river as the Bishnumati Clean-up Campaign entered 120th week on Saturday. Volunteers cleaned the river near the Paropakar area.
