A Cabinet meeting on Friday approved the Bill on Health Profession Education Commission in a move aimed at placating Dr Govinda KC, who has been on a hunger strike for the last six days.
“The bill will be sent to Parliament now,” said Minister for Information and Communication Sherdhan Rai. “If any changes need to be made, it will be done by Parliament.”
One of the provisions of the bill bars from establishing medical schools in the Kathmandu valley for the next 10 years.
A committee led by HPEC Vice-Chairman Dr Bhagwan Koirala had submitted the final draft to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli last month.
Dr KC has been demanding immediate endorsement of the bill with changes, free medical seats in government medical schools and establishing one government medical college in each federal province.
The Health Profession Education Commission (HPEC) is an overarching framework to regulate medical education in the country.
