The Ministry of Education (MoE) appointed Kali Prasad Pandey the acting vice-chancellor of Mid Western University (MWU) on Friday, two days after the government suspended 17 university officials, including Vice-chancellor Padam Lal Devkota, in corruption scandal.
After taking charge of the vice-chancellor’s office, Pandey appointed Mahendra Malla the university registrar. Malla is replacing Thakendra Prakash Giri.
The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had directed the government to suspend the MWU officials, including Devkota, Giri, and the University Service Commission members duo Navaraj Kandel and Shreeram Prasad Upadhyay, for their alleged involvement in embezzlement of millions of rupees in university building construction and logistics procurement.
The investigation of the anti-graft body has also found out that these officials were involved in irregularities in university staff appointment and mismanagement of the university fund.
The CIAA had recommended for the suspension to keep the accused officials from influencing the investigation.
The MoE has decided that Pandey will lead the MWU until the another decision has been made.
