Unmasking illusion of power in ‘Maharaniko Jatra’
The play directed by Dipal Baral will be shown at Kantipur Theatre from November 10.Post Report
Kantipur Film Academy has brought a new theatrical production titled ‘Maharaniko Jatra’ to Kantipur Theatre, Gairidhara. The play, conceptualised and directed by Dipal Baral, will begin from November 10, with performances every evening at 5 pm.
Featuring a cast that includes Usha Rajak, Raj Neupane, Suhana Acharya and more, the play explores societal hierarchies and the performative nature of power within a traditional setting.
It highlights how the chase for outward appearances, social image, and power often overshadows truth and human values. The Queen’s narrative reflects the superficial values, media influence, and hollow grandeur prevalent in Nepali society.
The Queen’s desire for ‘minimalism’ and her campaign to discard old possessions symbolise the attempt in Nepali society to reconcile tradition with modernity.
Director Baral says, “The play urges Nepali society to rise above superficial glamour and the pretense of power to seek truth and human values. It poses a critical question: Are we lost in the dazzle of authority, or are we pursuing genuine humanity?”
‘Maharaniko Jatra’ marks the third theatrical production by Kantipur Theatre, following its earlier plays ‘Meera’ and ‘Shirishko Phul’.
