Borja Golán, one of the world's best squash players, has arrived in Nepal to train Nepali players.
The Nepal Squash and Rackets Association (NSRA) invited Borja for a week-long training session. Borja, who is from Spain, is currently a Level 3 coach. As a player, he was in the top five in the world in 2014.
Borja has won the national squash championship in Spain 17 times. He also has 33 titles in the PSA Squash Tour and was a two-time European Individual Champion before retiring in 2023.
After his retirement, Borja started Golán Squash Academy, which targets producing new players and supporting talents. Nepal’s Amrit Thapa Magar is also undergoing training in the same academy.
He was welcomed amid a formal function by the NSRA in Satdobato, Lalitpur, on Monday.
"I have heard a lot about Nepal," Borja said. "I am now here to support the development and promotion of squash [in the country]. I am looking forward to learning something new as well."
Similarly, NSRA President Dhurba Bahadur Gurung stressed that Borja’s guidance would help uplift the skills of Nepali players.
"On this occasion, I would also like to request the Golán Squash Academy to manage tours for Nepali players with some of Europe's best," Gurung added.
Likewise, Lalitpur District Sports Development Committee’s chairman Binod Maharjan said that the training was a great initiative. "A proposal is being made to construct a squash court in Hetauda," Maharjan said.
Moreover, alongside players, coaches in Nepal will also have the opportunity to learn from one of the best in the game. Borja came to Nepal under the invitation of Renzo Andorno.
