Singh, Shah set national records in Japan

Nepali swimmer Gaurika Singh set another national record at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, on Wednesday.
Singh clocked 31.44 seconds in the women’s 50m backstroke during heats to smash her own previous best of 31.87 seconds that she set during the 12th South Asian Games in Guwahati, India. Singh, 20, who won four gold medals at the 2019 SAG in Kathmandu, had also set a new national record in the women’s 100m backstroke on Monday. Singh had completed the women’s 100m backstroke with a national record timing of 1:06.80, bettering her own national record of 1:07.31 set during 12th South Asian Games.
Singh finished 47th overall among 61 swimmers and did not advance into the semi-finals.
Alexander Shah also eclipsed his own national record during the men’s 100m freestyle heats, setting a new best of 52.94 seconds. His previous best was 52.96 seconds, achieved during the 11th NSA Cup Swimming Competition in June. Shah finished in the 81st place overall out of 115 participants and did not qualify for the semis.
Shah is also set to compete in the 50m freestyle on Thursday.
On Monday, Nasir Yahya Hussain had set his second national record in the men’s 200m freestyle with a timing of 1:57.26. He followed it up with a new best time of 4:08.23 in the men’s 400m freestyle.
Duwana Lama is also scheduled to compete in the women's 100m freestyle on Thursday.
