Singh betters nat’l record in 100m backstroke
Gaurika Singh improved on her 100m backstroke national record during the World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia on Monday.Ekantipur Report
Singh, who set six national records during the 20th National Open Swimming Championships in June, clocked 1:08.12 to win the heat 1 but her timings was far behind the 16 swimmers who qualified for the semi-finals. She finished at a distant 58th place in the overall standings.
But on a personal level, it was a credible performance from the 12-year-old swimmer who lives in London. She bettered her own previous national record in the event which he set at 1:13.13 during the nationals on July 9. During the same nationals, Singh had also set five other national records in the 100m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 50m freestyle.
Kiran Karki will compete in the men’s 50m breaststroke heats and Sofia Shah in the women’s 200m freestyle heats on Tuesday.
