Karna brace leads Birgunj into semis
Birgunj United routed VSS Dunlop Club of Kolkata 4-0 to enter the semi-finals of the sixth Simara Gold Cup Invitational football tournament here on Saturday.Laxmi Sah
Karna Limbu scored a double with Rajin Dhimal and Manoj Gurung adding one each as Birgunj ran riot over a hapless Dunlop team. After a drab first half where they squandered ample of scoring opportunities, Birgunj upped their game in the second 45 minutes to score all four goals.
Manoj Gurung put Birgunj ahead in the 54th minute when he headed home a corner from Dinesh Karki. Birgunj, the runners-up of the previous edition exerted more pressure after the goal and found it three minutes later. Karki was once again the supplier feeding man-of-the-match Limbu inside the area and the forward made no mistake to find the back of the net.
The Kolkata outfit suffered further blow in the 84th minute after Rijan Dhimal joined the scoring spree. Dhimal was in hand to give the final touch to a pass from Pukar Gahatraj. After conceding three goals, the visitors had put all their effort in playing a defensive game but Limbu, who was in fine touch, broke managed to penetrate their defence scoring his second goal in the 84th minute.
Birgunj United coach Sudeep Shrestha was still not satisfied. “We could have scored more goals but my boys were not able to grab the chances,” said Shrestha.
