Adhikari, Shrestha better own marks
Kamal Bahadur Adhikari and Dinesh Shrestha have set new national records in snatch during the third National Grand Prix Weightlifting Championships here on Wednesday.Adhikari of the Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) bettered his previous record of 117kg by lifting 118kg in the men’s 69kg weight category. He lifted 145kg in clean & jerk for a total lift of 263kg.
Another TAC lifter Shrestha too bettered his own previous snatch record by one kilogram with a lift of 113kg in men’s 94kg weight category. He went on to lift 140kg in clean & jerk for a total lift of 253kg. Both Adhikari and Shrestha had the previous records during the 17th Asian Games Gongzhou, China.
Gopal Shrestha of Ramechhap and Tara Devi Pun of Nepal Police Club (NPC) were adjudged the strongest man and women respectively. Gopal lifted a total of 264kg including 105kg in snatch and 112 in clean & jerk to earn the honour.
Pun, who competed in women’s 65kg weight division, lifted 65kg in snatch, 90kg in clean &jerk for a total lift of 155kg.
Likewise, Adhikari and Uttam Khatri of NPC received the best lifters of the tournament awards. Khatri lifted 63kg in snatch and 78kg in clean & jerked for a total lift of 141kg in the 63kg weight category.
In the junior category, Prakash KC, who on Tuesday set a new record in 56kg category was adjudged the best weightlifter.
In all, 63 lifters were in fray for nine gold medals during the two-day tournament.
