A massive flood swept away the Rani Bridge over the Tamor River, which connects ward 5 and 6 of Phaktanglung Rural Municipality, early Wednesday morning.
Constructed four years ago by Remit Hydropower Company at around Rs50 million, the Bailey bridge was washed away at around 4am, according to ward 6 chair Pemba Tashi Sherpa.
Mukunda Pokharel, site in-charge at Remit Hydropower, said the flood followed heavy rainfall since Tuesday evening.
Local resident Gyabu Sherpa said floods occurred in the Tamor, Ghunsa, and Hellok rivers, and a landslide struck the Sotli area in Lelep. However, residents in the affected areas managed to escape in time.
Floodwaters have also disrupted electricity generation in the area. Due to limited communication access, officials are still assessing the extent of the damage.
Phaktanglung Rural Municipality chair Rajan Limbu said flooding in the Hellok River increased the water level in the Tamor River, destroying the bridge.
He said another landslide occurred near a school in ward 6—the same location hit by a mudslide last year.
No human casualties have been reported so far, Limbu said.
