The Nepali Congress central committee elected through the party’s special general convention has submitted its details to the Election Commission, urging the constitutional body to make a prompt decision on updating the party’s official records.
A special general convention of the Congress held in Kathmandu from January 11 to 14, despite dissent from the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction, elected new leadership under Gagan Kumar Thapa.
Thapa made the request after filing an application at the commission, stating that the party’s office-bearers and central committee details had changed following the completion of the special general convention, as required by the party statute.
A team led by Thapa met Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari and other commissioners, requesting swift action on the application.
“We have come to the commission to update the details as required by the Political Parties Act,” Thapa said. “We request the Election Commission to take a decision on this as soon as possible.”
Thapa said the special general convention had been completed in accordance with the party statute and that all necessary documents and details had been submitted to the commission.
Meanwhile, the newly elected leadership on Thursday held its first central working committee meeting after the special convention at a hotel in Lalitpur. The meeting decided to form a manifesto drafting committee under the leadership of party president Thapa.
Party spokesperson Devraj Chalise, briefing journalists after the meeting, said the committee would be chaired by Thapa to prepare the party’s manifesto. The meeting also decided to form an election mobilisation committee to actively mobilise party ranks across the country with a focus on upcoming elections.
According to Chalise, the election mobilisation committee will be led by Vice-President Bishwa Prakash Sharma. The meeting also discussed preparations to periodically update the party’s past records following the second special general convention.
The central committee further decided to revise and update the proportional representation list already submitted to the Election Commission and expressed gratitude to party cadres who participated in the special general convention.
The delegation that visited the Election Commission included members of the newly elected central committee as well as legal experts. Senior advocates Harihar Dahal and Yadunath Khanal were part of the team. Vice-presidents Sharma and Pushpa Bhusal, along with other party leaders, also accompanied Thapa to the commission.
The Election Commission has accepted the application but has not issued any immediate response.
