Speaker Devraj Ghimire proceeded with the meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday despite obstruction by the opposition lawmakers from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).
Soon after the meeting commenced, lawmakers from the two parties stood up from their seats in protest. Speaker Ghimire allowed RPP chair Rajendra Lingden to speak, who urged him not to push ahead the House proceedings forcefully while the opposition’s concerns remained unresolved.
RSP Chief Whip Santosh Pariyar, speaking next, reiterated the party’s demand for the formation of a parliamentary committee to investigate the visit visa scam.
Despite continued sloganeering, Speaker Ghimire pressed ahead with the day’s agenda and opened the floor for discussion on the government’s annual estimates of revenue and expenditure for the fiscal year 2025-26. RSP lawmakers intensified their protest, chanting slogans demanding the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and immediate action to stop human trafficking.
Earlier in the day, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Acting Chairman Dol Prasad Aryal and Chief Whip Santosh Pariyar met Speaker Ghimire to discuss the ongoing parliamentary deadlock. The party made it clear that it would continue its protest as the government had not addressed its core demands.
The RSP leaders said the government was not taking the visit visa scam seriously and was reluctant to initiate an independent investigation.
“Our protest is necessary because the government has ignored our demands. We are not in a position to back down now,” the party leaders told the Speaker.
