Ruling coalition partners have reached an understanding to hold the general and provincial elections on November 20.
According to a leader who participated in the meeting of the ruling coalition on Wednesday, as per the understanding, the next meeting of the Cabinet will announce the date for the two elections.
“The ruling parties have agreed on holding the elections on November 20 even though different dates were discussed earlier,” the leader said. “They have also reached an understanding that the next Cabinet meeting, probably on Thursday, will take a decision to that effect.”
In the Nepali Congress-led coalition, the CPN (Maoist Centre), CPN (Unified Socialist), Janata Samajbadi Party and Rastriya Janamorcha are partners.
The Election Commission on July 6 had recommended November 18 for the general and provincial elections. However, the government was mulling over November 20.
A Congress leader told the Post earlier this week that the government would soon announce elections for November 20.
The commission has for long been saying that it needs at least 120 days for poll preparations. If the elections are declared for November 20, it will have 112 days for the preparations.
“That will be enough time,” Dinesh Thapaliya, chief election commissioner, told the Post earlier this week.
