The remaining five of the eight joint general secretaries of the Nepali Congress were declared on Friday, a day after the party elected two general secretaries and three joint general secretaries through its general convention.

Of the eight joint general secretaries elected, six are from the establishment side led by Sher Bahadur Deuba, who won the party president post on Tuesday by defeating Shekhar Koirala in a runoff.

Newly-elected joint general secretaries Jivan Pariyar and Badri Pande are from the Koirala panel.

There were altogether 19 contestants for eight posts.

From the pro-establishment Deuba panel, Bhisma Raj Aangdambe (Janajati), Mahalaxmi Upadhyay Dina (Women), Farmullah Mansoor (Muslim) and Mahendra Yadav (Madhesi), Kishor Singh Rathor (Khas-Arya) and Umakanta Chaudhary (Tharu) have been elected.

Angdembe defeated Bikash Lama, from the Koirala panel, with 798 votes.

Of the 4,681 votes cast, Aangdambe received 2,711 votes while Lama secured 1,913 votes.

In the Muslim category, Farmullah Mansoor from the Deuba panel defeated Shekh Wakil from the Koirala panel. Mansoor bagged 2,776 votes while Wakil obtained 1,871 votes.

Jivan Pariyar from the Koirala panel defeated Man Bahadur Bishwakarma, who represented the Deuba panel in the Dalit category with 37 votes.

Pariyar received 2,212 votes while Bishwakarma obtained 2,175 votes. Ganga Sunar, who contested from Bimalendra Nidhi panel received 232 votes.

Among the 4,694 votes cast 75 were invalid.

Upadhyay (2,533 votes) defeated Kamala Panta (2,105 votres) with 428 votes.

In the Khas-Arya category, Kishor Singh Rathor was elected from the Deuba camp with 2,576 votes against his rival Devraj Chalise from the Koirala panel who got 2,059 votes.

In the backward region category, Badri Pande of the Koirala panel defeated Chief Minister of Karnali Province Jeevan Bahadur Shahi from the Deuba camp with 278 votes. Pande received 2,411 votes while Shahi got 2,133. Chetraj Bajal from the Bimalendra Nidhi panel received 99 votes.

Under the Madhesi category, Deuba panel’s Mahendra Yadav (2,330 votes) defeated Koirala panel’s Ram Krishna Yadav (1,820) with 510 votes.

Ranjit Karna too had fought under the Madhesi category from the Koirala panel. Karna received 472 votes.

Minister for Water Supply Umakanta Chaudhary from the Deuba camp defeated Tejulal Chaudhary of Koirala camp under the Tharu category with 885 votes. Minister Chaudhary received 2,762 votes and Tejulal got 1,877 votes.

Minister Chaudhary is considered to be close to Krishna Prasad Sitaula. According to insiders, Deuba had fielded Pradeep Paudel for the post of general secretary and Chaudhary for joint general secretary.

With the counting of votes of all joint general secretaries over, the Nepali Congress has now elected all 13 office bearers. According to the central election committee of the party, counting of votes for Central Working Committee members has started Friday.

“With the declaration of eight joint general secretaries, winners of all 13 office bearers of the party have been finalised today,” said advocate Keshav Rijal, secretary of the central election committee of the party. “Counting of votes for the Central Working Committee members of the party has already started.”

The Congress will elect 121 Central Working Committee from the ongoing 14th general convention that kicked off in Kathmandu on Friday.

While Deuba has made a comeback for the next four years, the party has got some new faces in key positions.

Purna Bahadur Khadka and Dhanaraj Gurung were declared winners on Wednesday night as party vice presidents. Khadka is from the Deuba camp and Gurung from the Koirala camp.

Gurung defeated Bijay Kumar Gachhadar, another candidate from the Deuba camp, with just two votes.

The Koirala camp’s other candidate for the post was Chandra Bhandari.

Thursday was the most eventful day in the Congress convention, as counting was taking place for two general secretaries, the most coveted and second most powerful position in the party.

Gagan Thapa, 46, from the Koirala camp, and Bishwa Prakash Sharma from the Prakash Man Singh camp won the election. Thapa secured 3,023 votes, while Sharma obtained 1,984 votes.

Of the 13 office bearers, the Deuba camp has eight members including himself and the Koirala camp has four.

The Congress will nominate 33 members to the Central Working Committee. A treasurer will also be nominated from among the elected Central Committee members.
