Germany is providing around €8 million in assistance to Nepal following the devastating Bhotekoshi floods, combining emergency relief with humanitarian and longer-term development support for affected communities.

More than €500,000 of the package is being provided as emergency assistance through the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism, at the request of the Nepali government.

The supplies include kitchen sets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, drinking-water equipment and camp beds. They were provided by the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), which is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, as well as the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) and the German state of Thuringia.

Germany is also providing €200,000 in direct humanitarian assistance to two civil society organisations working with disaster-affected communities.

One project will focus on the health and wellbeing of pregnant women, new mothers and newborns, including by providing emergency supplies, maintaining access to essential health services and strengthening infection prevention measures.

The second project will form part of the European Union’s humanitarian response through its Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO). It will support income-generating opportunities for affected households, infrastructure recovery and improvements to conditions in displacement camps.

Germany has mobilised an additional €7.35 million through its development cooperation, recognising that the effects of the disaster will extend beyond the immediate emergency.

The funding comes from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and will be implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Germany’s federal enterprise for international cooperation, according to a statement issued by the German government.

Germany is also a major contributor to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) and the European Union.

Following the floods, CERF has mobilised $2.5 million in humanitarian funding, while the European Union has mobilised €2.5 million.
