Following the massive loss of life and property in the Bhotekoshi disaster, public interest in insurance-related issues has increased. What is the process for life and non-life insurance policyholders to file claims? What roles should insurance companies and government agencies play in ensuring smooth and speedy claim settlements? Kantipur Television’s Matrika Subedi put these and other questions to Purna Bahadur Thapa, deputy director at the Nepal Insurance Authority. Excerpts:
Following the floods, non-life insurance companies alone have received claims worth more than Rs26 billion. How long will it take for policyholders to receive their payments?
Although the Insurance Act provides for a two-month period for claim payments, the authority has introduced a simplified procedure for major disasters. Under this provision, claims can be settled more simply and conveniently on the basis of minimum required documents. Insurance companies can also provide advance payments of up to 50 percent of the assessed loss.
What is the estimated insurance claim from the Bhotekoshi disaster, including both non-life and life insurance?
It is not possible to say exactly how much the damage caused by the Bhotekoshi floods will amount to. However, according to preliminary data received from non-life insurers, the damage is estimated at around Rs26 billion. Data on accident and life insurance claims from various institutions is still being collected. Therefore, the total insurance claim amount is likely to increase.
How should the importance of insurance be understood in the context of disasters such as the Bhotekoshi floods?

Based on that report, the insurance company must make the payment within 35 days. What documents are required to file a claim?
