Around 150,000 election police personnel will be appointed on January 29 and deployed from February 8 to provide security for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.
The election police—previously known as temporary police—will be mobilised under the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force (APF).
Deputy Inspector General of police Abi Narayan Kafle, spokesperson of Nepal Police, said that the selected recruits will be issued appointment letters on January 29, followed by 10 days of basic training. After a further 10 days, they will be deployed to their designated areas from February 8.
“Election police will be deployed for a 40-day period. Appointments will be made on January 29, followed by 10 days of training, field deployment from February 8, and completion of duties by March 9,” he said.
The March 5 election will elect 275 members to the House of Representatives—110 under the proportional representation system and 165 through the first-past-the-post system. For election security, around 188,000 personnel from the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, APF and the National Investigation Department will be deployed nationwide.
Of these, 149,090 will be election police, including 133,980 under the Nepal Police and 15,110 under the APF. Recruitment applications were opened across all 77 districts from January 9, drawing around 200,000 applicants by the January 17 deadline. Examinations are currently underway.
Spokesperson Kafle said the selection process is ongoing and will be completed within a few days.
Under government-approved standards, election police will receive facilities equivalent to those of police constables, including basic pay, uniform, ration allowance, travel allowance, refreshments during training, and clothing expenses based on local weather conditions. All payments will be credited directly to their bank accounts.
The government has also assured compensation in case of injury or death during duty. However, those who fail to report to assigned locations or abandon duties will be denied all benefits. The appointment will be automatically cancelled if the election is called off or postponed.
