The commission has sent questionnaires to top leaders and plans to write to former prime minister KP Sharma Oli.Post Report
The inquiry commission probing the use of force and incidents of violence during the Gen Z protests in September has sent letters to Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Nepali Communist Party coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
A commission member said the letters seek explanations regarding the events that took place over the two days and have already been received by the leaders.
They have been asked to appear before the commission to record their statements or submit written responses if appearing in person is not possible. The commission has also sent a set of questions along with the letters.
A large crowd of unruly protesters attacked former prime minister Deuba and his wife Arzu Rana Deuba, who was the foreign minister at the time, at their residence in Budhanilkantha on September 9. On the same day, protesters burnt Dahal’s residence at Khumaltar, Lalitpur, while Dahal had already left the home.
The commission is also preparing to write to CPN-UML chair KP Sharma Oli, who was prime minister during the protests. Officials have already discussed the matter with Prime Minister Sushila Karki. Speaking to reporters after meeting Prime Minister Karki at Singha Durbar on Thursday, commission chair Gauri Bahadur Karki said a letter summoning the UML chair Oli was being finalised.
The panel recorded a statement from former home minister Ramesh Lekhak on Wednesday and held discussions with Prime Minister Karki at Singha Durbar on Thursday.
The commission on Thursday lifted the travel ban imposed on Lekhak.
The government on September 21 formed the inquiry commission led by former judge Karki to investigate the killings of protesters, injuries and widespread destruction during the September Gen Z protests.
