Police have arrested two young men for firing a pistol stolen during the Gen Z uprising on September 9 and recording a video of the act.
The Valley Crime Investigation Office apprehended Samir Shrestha, 23, of Nuwakot, currently residing in Naya Bazaar, and Alex Nepali, 23, of Kavre, living in Chhetrapati, in connection with the act.
Superintendent of Police Kaji Kumar Acharya said that both men were found to have fired the weapon. “Samir had fired the pistol from the rooftop of a house in Nagarjun Municipality,” Acharya said, adding that both have confessed to the act during interrogation. “We have also recovered the video he filmed while doing so.”
Police recovered a 54 calibre pistol, an empty magazine, and 12 rounds of bullets from their possession.
Officers were initially deployed after receiving reports of men brandishing weapons and causing panic near the Ichangu Narayan Temple area.
Police not only seized the firearm but also discovered video footage showing the duo recklessly firing shots.
Police are preparing to extend their detention for further investigation under the Arms and Ammunition Act. It was later revealed that Samir Shrestha had previously faced legal action in a case related to indecent behaviour.
Police records show that over 450 police stations were vandalised or set ablaze during the September 9 violence. More than 1,200 weapons were looted, along with nearly 100,000 rounds of ammunition.
The Nepal Police Headquarters on Wednesday formed an internal investigation committee to probe the loss of lives and property during the Gen Z-led protest on September 8 and the ensuing violence and destruction on September 9.
