National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal has said that Nepal is committed to strengthening democracy by ensuring the timely conduct of elections.
Dahal, who is in Geneva, Switzerland, to attend the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, made the remarks during a bilateral meeting with an Indian parliamentary delegation led by Anurag Singh Thakur.
According to Dahal’s Secretariat, he briefed the Indian delegation on the recent Gen Z demonstrations in Nepal, the formation of an interim government, and the announcement of fresh elections to the House of Representatives scheduled for March 5, 2026.
Dahal said Nepal–India relations go beyond formal state ties and are deeply rooted in people-to-people connections.
He also met IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong and discussed Nepal’s new political context, noting that the National Assembly continues to carry out its legislative duties effectively.
In another meeting with Australian Speaker Milton Dick, Dahal expressed hope for stronger cooperation with Australia in climate change mitigation, renewable energy, and good local governance. He urged Australia to expand support in education, technical training, and research exchange.
Appreciating Australia’s assistance in education, health, governance, and community forestry, Dahal thanked the Australian government for ensuring the safety and dignity of Nepali students and the broader Nepali community living there.
