Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has said a committee has been formed to investigate the August 8 clash at Kailali Prison.
Speaking at a meeting of the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee in Singha Durbar on Wednesday, he said the panel, led by the assistant chief district officer, will submit its report within the deadline, and legal action will be taken against those found guilty.
One inmate was killed and 48 others were injured in the late-night clash. Of them, three referred by the hospital were brought to Kathmandu—two are undergoing treatment at the Trauma Centre and one at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
Four have been sent back to prison after treatment, while the remaining 41 are receiving care at Seti Provincial Hospital. The deceased’s body has been handed over to the family after completing legal procedures.
The prison currently houses 643 male inmates in two male blocks and 47 female inmates in one block. According to the report, on the night of the incident, inmates broke down the wall separating the two male blocks, with prisoners from Block A attacking those in Block B.
Seventeen inmates involved in the clash have been transferred elsewhere. Authorities have conducted two special searches inside the prison to find illegal items. The chief district officer has also inspected the facility and urged inmates to maintain peace and security.
Lekhak said the situation in the prison is now normal, security personnel have been deployed in adequate numbers, and arrangements have been made for inmates to meet their families.
