The terror of leopards continues to haunt residents of Gulariya, the district headquarters of Bardiya. A series of attacks on livestock in Gulariya has alarmed the local people.
On Friday night, a leopard broke into the shed of Mohammad Hanif Ansari in ward 8 of Gulariya Municipality and killed two goats. According to his wife Sahida Bano Ansari, one of the goats was worth around Rs 25,000.
“We can’t afford to fence our shed with wire mesh. It is becoming harder to protect even our young children,” she complained. This incident follows similar attacks in recent weeks.
On July 10, three goats belonging to Awadhram Lodh were killed and around two weeks before that incident three more goats of Him Bahadur Pun of Surajpur were preyed upon. The leopard has also reportedly killed several dogs.
Local Hamid Idrisi said the leopard has been seen regularly in the area for over a week and has been captured on CCTV footage. “Despite repeated sightings, the Division Forest Office has shown no urgency,” he added.
Dharmendra Kumar Baniya, chairman of Gulariya-8, has called on authorities to take immediate action, warning of potential human casualties. Last fiscal year, four people—including two girls from Gulariya—were killed and 13 others injured in leopard attacks across the district.
The Division Forest Office could not be reached for comment.
