Opposition parties demand high-level or parliamentary probe; Speaker proceeds despite protest.

Lawmakers from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) gave continuity to boycotting meetings of the House of Representatives also on Tuesday over the alleged misuse of visit visas with involvement from high officials and the government itself.
As soon as Speaker Devraj Ghimire initiated proceedings, lawmakers from both parties stood from their seats in protest.
The Speaker allowed RSP lawmaker Tosima Karki to speak, during which she reiterated her party’s demand for a high-level probe and criticised the government’s inaction.
“For two months, we have been calling for an investigation. Until a high-level committee is formed, our protest will continue,” said Karki. She expressed concern over Parliament functioning as normal despite the continuous objections of two opposition parties.
Karki also demanded that the ministerial residence in the Bhaisepati area, allegedly built on acquired land, allow the road project to proceed. She also expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of investigation into a leaked audio tape in which a minister is accused of seeking bribes.
RPP lawmaker Deepak Bahadur Singh said his party’s protest would continue until a parliamentary investigation committee is formed. He also criticised the government for failing to release Rs700 million in subsidies to the Sahid Gangalal Heart Centre, which, he claimed, had led to the suspension of life-saving heart surgeries for children.
Although both RSP and RPP are pressing for an investigation, the two parties are not in agreement on the format. While RSP is demanding a high-level independent committee, the RPP has called for a parliamentary probe panel.
Despite the boycott, Speaker Ghimire proceeded with the day’s scheduled agenda. The tussle between the opposition and the ruling alliance continues to deepen as the House fails to reach an agreement on the probe demands.
